Torrente vence o Grande Prémio de Portugal
Shaun Torrente encerrou um fim-de-semana perfeito em Portimão com luzes a marcar a vitória no UIM F1H2O Grande Prémio de Portugal, levando para casa o seu companheiro de equipa Thani Al Qemzi para completar uma dobradinha do Team Abu Dhabi , com o vencedor do ano passado no circuito do Rio Arade, Philippe Chiappe, terminando em terceiro.
A dupla de Abu Dhabi capitalizou sua dobradinha no BRM Qualifying de ontem e ficou na frente no final da volta quando a bandeira amarela saiu para retardar o processo depois de uma colisão entre Marit Stromoy e Jonas Andersson, cujo motor explodiu em chamas e ambos imediatamente saíram da corrida.
O Torrente ficou imediatamente no controle novamente quando a bandeira verde foi dada na 5ª volta e conseguiu manter o ponto durante toda a corrida de 48 voltas e pegou a bandeira quadriculada para ganhar seu primeiro Grand Prix para Abu Dhabi por 2.09s. "É um tremendo, um final de semana perfeito. Eu tenho esperado por isso por um bom tempo ”, disse Torrente. “Estávamos tão preparados para isso. Sabíamos qual motor estaríamos operando. Nunca tirei isso. Sabíamos quais hélices iríamos usar e tudo se encaixou. ”
O único desafio de verdade foi o companheiro de equipe Thani Al Qemzi, que, depois de ter apertado Torrente nas eliminatórias de ontem, manteve a pressão sobre ele durante todo o tempo e fechou para dentro de dois segundos enquanto os dois cuspiam seu caminho por meio de backmarkers.
A luta por trás da dupla ficou entre o tricampeão Chiappe e o quatro vezes campeão Alex Carella, com Chiappe passando pelo piloto da Victory, que estava com problemas na 34ª volta e depois pressionou para tentar fechar a diferença para Al Qemzi, mas veio apenas curto.
Carella foi capaz de administrar seus problemas e se manteve no quarto lugar, mas sofreu uma pressão crescente nas últimas voltas do companheiro de equipa de Chiappe, Peter Morin, que produziu seus melhores resultados desde a estreia no campeonato no ano passado, melhorando o sexto lugar na classificação, quinto à frente de Ahmed Al Hameli.
Duarte Benavente, da F1 Atlantic, não conseguiu recuperar depois de ter começado em sétimo, com Francesco Cantando a fazer o melhor em seu Blaze em oitavo, Erik Edin conseguiu a melhor finalização em sua segunda largada, em nono, à frente de Erik Rígido.
Apesar do tempo limitado na água antes da corrida, devido a problemas no motor, Bartek Marszalek, da Emirates Racing, conseguiu rodar durante 46 voltas, Cedric Desguines a retirar-se na 43ª volta, mas classificado em 12º à frente de Rashed Al Qemzi. A corrida de Grant Trask terminou na 39ª volta, a estreante Simone Schuft completou 38 voltas, com a dupla Sam Crio e Filip Roms enfrentando uma tarde frustrante, com Selio não começando a se aposentar na 10ª volta.

TORRENTE WINS GRAND PRIX OF PORTUGAL
Sunday, 20 May, PORTIMAO (Portugal): Shaun Torrente rounded off a perfect weekend in Portimao with a lights to flag victory at the UIM F1H2O Grand Prix of Portugal, leading home his teammate Thani Al Qemzi to complete a Team Abu Dhabi one-two, with last year’s winner on the Arade River circuit Philippe Chiappe finishing in third.
The Abu Dhabi duo capitalised on their one-two in yesterday’s BRM Qualifying and were out front at the end of the start lap when the yellow flag came out to slow proceedings after a collision between Marit Stromoy and Jonas Andersson whose engine burst into flames and both immediately retiring from the race.
Torrente was immediately in control again when the green flag was given on lap 5 and was able to hold point throughout the 48 lap race and taking the chequered flag to win his debut Grand Prix for Abu Dhabi by 2.09s. “It’s just tremendous, a perfect weekend. I have been waiting for this for quite a while,” said Torrente. “We were so prepared for this. We knew which engine we were going to run. Never took it off. We knew which propellers we were going to use and it all came together.”
The only real challenger was teammate Thani Al Qemzi who, after pushing Torrente close in yesterday’s qualifying, kept the pressure on him throughout and closed to within two seconds as the pair scythed their way through backmarkers.
The fight behind the lead duo was between three-time champion Chiappe and four-time and defending champion Alex Carella with Chiappe passing the Victory driver who was having trim issues on lap 34 and then pushed to try to close the gap to Al Qemzi but came up just short.
Carella was able to manage his issues and held onto to fourth place but came under increasing pressure in the closing laps from Chiappe’s CTIC teammate Peter Morin, who produced his best results since his championship debut last year, improving on a best sixth in qualifying to finish in fifth ahead of Ahmed Al Hameli.
F1 Atlantic’s Duarte Benavente was unable to make up ground after starting in seventh, with Francesco Cantando enjoying by far his best outing in his Blaze in eighth, Erik Edin getting his best finish in just his second start in the top tier in ninth ahead of Erik Stark. Despite limited time on the water prior to the race because of engine problems Emirates Racing’s Bartek Marszalek was able to run for 46 laps, Cedric Desguines retiring on lap 43 but classified in 12th ahead of Rashed Al Qemzi. Grant Trask’s race ended on lap 39, debutant Simone Schuft completing 38 laps, with Mad Croc duo Sami Selio and Filip Roms’ enduring a frustrating afternoon, Selio failing to start his teammate retiring on lap 10.
